1. GOD MADE THE COUNTRY (ईश्वर ने गाँव बनाया)
Possess ye, therefore, ye, who borne about
In chariots and sedans, know no fatigue
But that of idleness, and taste no scenes
But such as art contrives, possess ye still
Your element; there only can ye shine;
तुमपर हावी है, अतः तुम जो जन्म आसपास
रथों और पलकियों में, जाना नहीं थकारन
किन्तु यह निठल्लापन, और दृश्यों में रूचि नहीं
किन्तु जैसा कला निमार्ण करती है, वहीं तुमपर हावी होता है
तुम्हारा तत्त्व, उसी में तुम चमक सकते हो।
There only minds like yours can do no harm.
Our groves were planted to console at noon
The pensive wanderer in their shades. At eve
The moonbeam, sliding softly in between
The sleeping leaves, is all the light they wish.
यहाँ (गाँवों में) केवल तुम्हारा मन तुम्हारे
जैसा कोई क्षति नहीं कर सकता।
हमारे झुरमुट लगे थे दोपहर में सान्त्वना देने को
खिन्न आवारा उनकी छाँह में। शाम को चाँद-किरण
आहिस्ते फिसलता बीच से
सोते हुए पत्तों के, जितना चाहें प्रकाश पाते हैं
Birds warbling all the music. We can spare
The splendour of your lamps; they but eclipse
Our softer satellite. Your songs confound
Our more harmonious notes: the thrush departs
Scar’d, and th’ offended nightingale is mute.,
चिड़ियाँ चहचहाती है गीत। हमलोग उसे गाने देते हैं
तुम्हारे दीपक की चमक, वे किन्तु मात करते हैं
हमारे कोमलतर उपग्रह को। तुम्हारे गीत चकरा डालते हैं
हमारे अधिक सुसंगत सुर :कस्तूरिका विदा होती है
भयभीत, और अपमानित बुलबुल मौन हो जाती है।
